Explore the Extraordinary Blue Nova 825 — 2024 Colour of the Year

Dec 06, 2023

Benjamin Moore teamed up with Jeff Bezos’Blue Origin aerospace company to announce their colour of the year 2024 — Blue Nova 825, an intergalactic blue and purple colour palette. It leans more toward the colour spectrum’s cool end than its 2023 predecessor, Raspberry Blush, and is moodier with qualities of intrigue and reassurance.

Read on to learn about Benjamin Moore’s accompanying colour palette with its nine additional colours that further support Blue Nova, the trends and events that influenced it, the science behind the colour blue, and how to incorporate it into your home decor.

The Inspiration Behind Blue Nova 825

The colour blue has many historical connotations. In the ancient world, people believed the colour blue had mystical powers (blue moon), while hundreds of years later, they started associating royalty with the colour blue (royal blue) and aristocrats who were privileged, wealthy, and powerful (blue blood). In the industrial age, they used blue dye for uniforms in hospitals, the navy, and industrial factories (blue-collar workers).

Blue Nova 825 evokes confidence, loyalty, and trust with its pale yet punchy mid-tones brimming with hope and poised for adventure. It offers a sense of calm and serenity with a hint of anticipation and wonder.

Consumers wanted more expressive, bolder colours in their homes, and our colour experts granted their wishes with the colour trends 2023 palette. They took a softer approach for 2024 and looked at happier medium colours with many midtones — a more balanced palette that’s not too dark or light but still has bolder colours with softer shades.

Multiple aspects influenced the colour team toward Blue Nova, such as:

  • Browsing several images
  • Collected items throughout their travels
  • Attended trade shows
  • Looked at different designs
  • Studied undertones in everyday encounters, even in their own backyards

When they brought their ideas to the table, it was like putting a puzzle together. It started by looking at warmer and deeper colours and moved to cooler colours with warmth in their undertones.

They were inspired by an idea based on the near and far and going outside the everyday ordinary with an almost need for escape.

Characteristics of Blue Nova 825

Describing Blue Nova 825 as just a colour is only half the picture. Yes, it’s a beautiful mid-tone colour that balances blue and violet. However, it also plays with the lighting and draws consumers in with its intriguing, mystical features that instill comfort in the space. The alluring mid-tones and depth offer an undercurrent of reassurance and endless classic appeal.

Comparing Blue Nova with previous years, you could say we took Mysterious — the reassuring and classical navy-type colour from the colour trends palette 2022 and the daring and bold 2023 Starry Night Blue and converged them into Blue Nova.

Benjamin Moore predicts that 2024 is the year for gentleness, prioritizing more dusty and faded vintage-inspired colours that offer versatility and timelessness. Besides Blue Nova 825, the 2024 colour trend palette includes:

  • Topaz:A glowing burnt orange
  • Polar Sky: A pale sky-blue
  • Hazy Lilac:A warm grey with reddish undertones
  • Antique Pewter: A warm complex neutral with hints of green, brown, and grey
  • Regent Green:A velvety dark green that’s a softer alternative to black
  • Teacup Rose: An elegant pink with orange undertones
  • Pristine:A faded ballet slipper pink
  • Honeybee:A light yellow with beige undertones
  • White Dove:An off-white with a hint of grey

How to Incorporate Blue Nova 825 in Home Decor

Using eye-catching colours to make a statement, reflect your personal style, and make your home a sanctuary is Blue Nova 825 in a nutshell.Create a complimentary schemeby combining Blue Nova with a vibrant terracotta or Topaz burnt orange to produce an energizing and high-contrast look in any room. Blue Nova 825 works exceptionally well in smaller spaces as an accent to highlight architectural features such as wainscotting, picture rails, or skirt boarding, allowing the contrasting colour to bring out the warmth in your unexpected and dynamic spaces.

Some examples of pairing with complimentary colours:

  • Blue Nova chair rails against a Honeybee kitchen wall
  • Blue shelves on a Pristine or Polar Sky wall
  • Blue lower cabinets with white uppers using White Dove

The Benjamin Moore colour experts continuously referred to the colour wheel to ensure colours paired well as timeless and unique combinations that were inviting and exciting yet slightly different.

The Science Behind the Colour

Psychologists agree that the colour blue is hardwired in humans through the evolution of survival in the wild under blue skies and within blue waters. Today, the colour blue impacts our mood and perception. Blue is associated with creativity, wisdom, and spirituality and helps us feel calm and more comfortable expressing feelings.
