Tips for Applying and Maintaining SRD Wood Finish
Rain, snow, mould, mildew, and UV rays can all affect the quality of your exterior wood finish. Here are some tips for applying and maintaining your outdoor fence or deck using SICO® ProLuxe® deck stain.
- When mould or mildew is present: Thoroughly wet your wood surfaces with water, then spray with a cleaning solution consisting of 4 ounces of 100% powdered TSP or phosphate-free substitute and 1 quart of liquid bleach mixed with 3 quarts of water.
- Prepare your surfaces properly: Sand all pre-cleaned wood, deck or fence, with 80 - 120 grit sandpaper (for vertical surfaces) and 60 - 80 grit sandpaper (for horizontal surfaces). Sand in the same direction as your wood grain and remove sanding dust.
- For translucent finishes: Remove previous finishes. If using a solid stain, your existing coating can remain if it’s well-adhered to the surface and in good condition.
- Application: Apply SRD (Siding, Railings, and Deck) wood finish when the air and surface temperature are between 10ºC to 35ºC with no rain expected for at least 5 hours.
- Stir, saturate, and apply properly: Stir well before using and avoid shaking if using the product the same day. Saturate all end grains, and apply in the direction of the wood grain.
- Drying time: Allow your finish to dry for 48 - 72 hours.
Frequently Asked Questions About SRD Wood Finish
Here are the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about SRD wood finish.
What is SRD Wood Finish?
SRD stands for Siding, Railing, and Deck and is a high-quality, non-film-forming, oil-based translucent finish for various exterior wood surfaces, including decks, siding, logs, rails, and deck furniture.
Is SICO® ProLuxe® SRD RE Oil Based?
SICO® ProLuxe® SRD RE wood finish is a deep penetrating, one-coat, high-solid alkyd-oil formula offering a long-lasting, rich wet look.
Is Sikkens the same as Proluxe?
Sikkens Proluxe and Sikkens SRD wood finishes are the same product — new name, same great formula. For example, SICO® ProLuxe® Premium Deck Wood Finish was formerly called Sikkens Cetol Dek Finish.
Is Sikkens/Proluxe a paint or a stain?
Sikkens Canada produces premium solutions for wood applications in paints, coatings, and stains.
What is the best weather-resistant wood finish?
SICO® ProLuxe® wood stains provide ultimate protection against fading, whitening, and chalking. Its water-resistant and weatherproof formula is ideal for multiple exterior wood surfaces, including treated and torrefied wood.
What are the two major types of wood finish?
Surface and penetrating are the most common. Penetrating finishes, like SICO® ProLuxe®, infiltrate the pores of the wood and fibres to provide moisture protection and a beautiful, low-sheen, decorative finish that takes longer to dry than surface finishes.
Where can I find SICO® ProLuxe® SRD wood finish locally?
You can find everything you need for your next project at your Crowfoot Benjamin Moore Paint Store in Calgary.
